Resume vs CV: What's the Difference?
A resume is a short (one–two page), tailored summary of your most relevant experience, used for most jobs. A CV (curriculum vitae) is a longer, comprehensive record of your entire academic and professional history, used for academic, research, medical and some international roles. One big catch: in the UK, Ireland and much of Europe, people say "CV" when they mean what the US calls a resume. Here's how to tell which you actually need.
Resume vs CV at a glance
| Resume | CV | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1–2 pages | 2+ pages (no limit) |
| Content | Tailored highlights | Full history: publications, research, teaching |
| Best for | Most jobs (industry/corporate) | Academia, research, medicine, grants |
| Tailoring | Customised per application | Accumulates over your career |
The US vs UK terminology trap
This is where most confusion comes from:
- US & Canada: "resume" and "CV" are different documents — a CV means the long academic version.
- UK, Ireland & much of Europe: "CV" is the everyday word for the 1–2 page job document (what Americans call a resume).
- India: both terms are used, usually meaning the same 1–2 page job resume.
If a non-academic job in the UK or Europe asks for a "CV," send a resume — one to two pages, tailored to the role. They don't want your full academic history.
When to use a resume
- Corporate, industry and private-sector jobs.
- Almost anything in the US, Canada or India outside academia.
- Any role where you need to tailor to a specific posting (most of them).
When to use a CV
- Academic, teaching and research positions.
- Grants, fellowships, and scientific or medical roles.
- When an academic posting explicitly requests a full CV.
Whichever you need, start from a clean, ATS-friendly template and tailor it in minutes.

Neither — it depends on the role and country. Use a resume for industry jobs; use a full CV for academic, research or medical positions.
